Shell grotto type decoration used to be found mainly in and around the gardens

of grand houses throughout Europe. From 1600 onwards, as the popularity and availability of shells grew it became fashionable for people to decorate within their homes using shells. The exterior grotto type decoration changed when it arrived in the interior of the home. It became more ordered and delicate. Nowadays, there are no rules to what styles stay exterior and what come in.
